Academic Writing

My research examines historical media representation of women's paid labor, with a focus on the early and mid-20th century. I use archival research combined with textual and visual analysis, informed by cultural studies theory.
I am particularly interested in historical representation of secretaries.
In addition to the books, my peer-reviewed articles and academic book reviews have appeared in journals including Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Feminist Media Studies, American Journalism, Women’s Studies—An Interdisciplinary Journal and the Journal of Popular Culture.
Awards include the David Sloan Award for top faculty paper and the Maurine Beasley Award for outstanding women's history paper, both from the American Journalism Historians Association; 2nd place in the Ronald T. and Gayla D. Farrar Media & Civil Rights History Award; and two awards from the AEJMC History Division.
I am a former member of the Board of Directors of AEJMC as head of that organization's Publications Committee, a past head of the Cultural and Critical Studies Division and former PF&R chair of the History Division. I currently serve as chair of the Blanchard Dissertation Prize Committee for the American Journalism Historians Association and am a member of the editorial team for Women's Suffrage and the Media.
I was co-convener (with David Lavery, Kirsty Fairclough, and Michael Goddard) of Mad Men: The Conference at MTSU in May 2016.
